---Warhol, Rothko, Seth: Canadian cartoonist added to AGO

The Toronto-based Art Gallery of Ontario announced Wednesday that it is
adding a large-scale pen-and-ink drawing by acclaimed Canadian
cartoonist
Seth to its contemporary art collection.

Hush , which depicts a number of nighttime vignettes of lonely Canadian
settings, is an important purchase that recognizes the comic "as a
fully
articulated art form on its own terms," the gallery said in a
statement.

"This work by Seth was acquired as a work of art and not an example of
popular culture," said Ben Portis, the gallery's assistant curator of
contemporary art. "What makes Hush the right work for the gallery is
the
degree to which it converses with depictions of the Canadian landscape
in
the AGO collection, from Tom Thomson to today."

The gallery, which recently began its long-awaited, Frank
Gehry-designed
renovation project, will also feature Seth's cartoons in his first solo
museum exhibition. "Present Tense: Seth" will include original drawings
from his award-winning ongoing comic series Clyde Fans and Seth's
cardboard cityscape of the fictional northern Ontario town of Dominion,
which is depicted in the series.

"Present Tense: Seth" will run from June 29 through Oct. 16, with the
artist discussing his work at an evening session on June 30. The
exhibit
is one in a series of contemporary art exhibits the gallery is staging
during its renovations.
